Hylin, West Leederville

Hylin is a rustic modern cafe located in the more industrial area of Leederville. They serve American style dishes, along with a few spanish influences. We would like to warn you that the cafe space is quite small and there definitely will be a 30+ min wait during the weekends, so probably best to try Hylin out during the week. We didn't mind so much waiting for a table and our food however on the day it was extremely windy and the cafe had all its windows open, I know all the girls reading this will understand the struggle of trying to eat while your hair is getting stuck in your lipgloss!

Chai Latte ($4.50)

We understand that Hylin is more of a self-serve style cafe, but we feel their service was not quite up to scratch on this particular day. After we had been seated, we weren't even given tap water until we asked for it when we were served with the chai lattes. On another note, the chai lattes were lovely and smooth, we could tell they were brewed properly with chai tea, rather than powder or syrup.

Spanish Beans ($16.50)

This dish was a spanish twist on your average baked beans and eggs. The medley of beans, chorizo, capsicum and tomato was a delicious combination. The poached eggs were cooked to perfection and once we cut into the yolk, it seeped into the beans which made it beautiful and creamy. We also loved that it was served with crusty bread perfect for dunking, we give it a rating of 8/10.

Smashed Avocado & Eggs ($15.50)

We've seen this dish quite frequently all over Instagram, so we had to try it! As you can seen from the amazing picture above, the eggs were perfectly poached with a gooey yolk. Avocado and eggs on toast is such a classic, you can never go wrong with this combination. The only negative comment we have to say about this dish is that it was a little plain, we feel that there could've been more creativity put into this classic. Perhaps a bit of cream cheese and spice added to the avocado would've done the trick. It was good but not great, so we rate this dish 6.5/10.

Overall Review

We know that Hylin is very hyped up, however we did not feel it lived up to the expectations. The food was good quality but it didn't blow us away and the service could be improved. The highlight of our experience was the Spanish Beans and the low light was getting mouthfuls of hair due to heavy wind flowing through the whole cafe. We would've really loved to give Hylin a good review but on this occasion it disappointed us, we rate it 6.5/10.
